I didn’t think it was possible, but I managed it. 
 
Yesterday, for virtually 100% of my waking hours, I was staring at a screen. 
Phone. Laptop. Tablet. TV. Dashboards. Video calls. Games. Notifications. 
Screens, screens, screens. 
 
Barely a human interaction in sight all day. 
 
It sounds mildly amusing, until you pause and sit with what that actually means. 
 
Because something important is happening here, and it runs far deeper than conversations about “screen-time” or productivity hacks. We are quietly losing the habit and muscle memory of real, human interaction, and with it, we’re losing a set of skills we once took entirely for granted. 
 
These were the skills that made us interesting people. 
 
Compelling colleagues. 
 
Trusted partners. 
 
Effective leaders. 
 
And as with anything that becomes rarer over time, these lost skills are becoming more and more valuable. 
 
The Disappearing Human Skills 
 
Think about the leaders you’ve respected most in your life. Chances are it wasn’t their technical knowledge that stood out, it was something harder to define: 
 
Authenticity 
Presence 
Gravitas 
The ability to listen properly 
To read a room 
To influence without authority 
To lead thinking, not just dictate tasks 
 
These are deeply human skills. And they’re developed through practice; not theory, not frameworks, and certainly not screens. 
 
Yet modern working life is increasingly mediated by technology. We communicate through messages rather than moments. We “meet” without ever sharing physical space. We lead teams we rarely sit beside. And over time, the subtle art of human interaction is forgotten. 
 
Ironically, just as these skills are fading from everyday use, they are becoming more important than ever. 
 
Why Human Leadership Now Stands Out 
 
In a world saturated with automation, AI, dashboards and digital systems, technical competence is expected. It no longer differentiates. 
 
What does differentiate is humanity. 
 
The leader who can create trust quickly. 
 
Who brings calm rather than noise. 
 
Who can hold attention without slides. 
 
Who can influence a group simply by how they show up. 
 
In rooms full of screens, the human leader stands out. 
 
Organisations invest heavily in systems, processes and data yet they struggle with engagement, confidence, collaboration and leadership depth.

Learning That Doesn’t Involve Another Screen

The Question Worth Asking 
 
We’re not anti-technology. Screens aren’t going anywhere and nor should they. 
 
But the question leaders and organisations now need to ask is this: 
 
How are we deliberately developing the human skills that technology can’t replace? 
 
Because if we leave it to chance, those skills will continue to fade. But if we cultivate them intentionally, they become a powerful differentiator for individuals, teams and entire organisations.
