An Elephant Never Forgets –
a new approach to leadership development investment from Elephant Leadership Camps
The “value” of leadership development has, for too long, been measured through superficial means such as post-course feedback forms, delegate satisfaction scores, and subjective assessments of the learning experience.
Marking your coach ‘out of 10’ for public speaking ability will not answer the question that matters most at an organisational level:
Did this investment in professional training and growth meaningfully improve retention, engagement, and the forward momentum of our most valuable people?
At Elephant Leadership Camps, we believe this question should sit at the very centre of how leadership development is designed, delivered and evaluated.
As a result, we are introducing a new programme:
“An Elephant Never Forgets.”
This initiative represents a deliberate shift away from traditional training models towards a more accountable, outcome-focused approach; one that directly aligns leadership development investment with tangible organisational impact.
The Commercial Challenge
Within any population of high-potential talent, there will always be individuals who, despite significant investment in their development, begin to lose their way.
This can manifest in:
gradual disengagement or out-of-character behaviour
drifting from their original trajectory and energy
increasing openness to external opportunities
In many cases, this shift is not immediately visible. By the time it is recognised, significant investment in that individual may already be at risk of being lost.
And inevitably, a cycle develops:
a talented individual is perceived as a flight risk, so further investment in them is withheld; but
because investment is withheld, they become more likely to leave.
It becomes a self-fulfilling and destructive cycle.
The cost of replacing such individuals, financially, culturally and operationally, is substantial.
Our Intervention
We take a different approach under “An Elephant Never Forgets.”
We invite organisations to nominate a small number of high-potential individuals, particularly those critical to future success but potentially at risk of disengagement.
These individuals then attend an Elephant Leadership Camp, where we:
immerse them in a highly focused, distraction-free environment
reconnect them with purpose, direction and leadership identity
provide targeted one-to-one support alongside the core experience
translate potential into renewed commitment to their organisation
This is not conventional training. It is a reset, a re-engagement, and a re-commitment process.
A Different Kind of Commercial Model
What distinguishes “An Elephant Never Forgets” is not only the intervention itself, but how we stand behind it.
We are partnering with a small number of organisations to pilot a model that shares the commercial risk of leadership development in critical, flight-risk individuals.
The model is simple:
If the Camp intervention is successful, the organisation retains a reinvigorated, high-value individual at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
If it does not result in meaningful and sustained impact (in that they resign their employment), we will:
offer a fully funded place on a future Camp for another delegate, or
refund 90% (*) of the original investment in the Camp.
*10% is retained as a contribution towards our administrative costs.
This model is subject to our standard terms and conditions, that are available to read on the website.
Why This Matters
It is highly unusual within the leadership development sector to see providers align their commercial model with outcomes such as retention and behavioural change.
This is not because these outcomes are unimportant, but because they require a level of confidence, accountability and partnership that most training providers are not structured to offer.
At Elephant Leadership Camps, we believe this alignment is both possible and necessary.
Conditions for Success
To ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the programme, participation is subject to a small number of practical considerations, including:
active engagement from the individual’s line manager
organisational support before and after the Camp
a shared commitment to applying the learning in a real-world context
Under these conditions, the programme is built around a headline offer of a three-month retention-based guarantee, aligning our success directly with yours.
In practical terms:
If a delegate attends a Camp under the “An Elephant Never Forgets” programme and leaves your organisation within three months, you will receive either a 100% credit for a future delegate or a 90% refund of the Camp fee.
In this sense, the model mirrors a recruitment guarantee, but applied, in a market-leading way, to leadership development investment instead.
An Invitation
We have seen the transformative impact this approach can have on individuals and organisations alike.
“An Elephant Never Forgets” represents the next step, placing a clear commercial stake behind that impact.
We are now inviting a select number of organisations to participate in this pilot.
If you are re-evaluating how leadership development should be measured, and how investment in high-potential talent can be both protected and amplified, we would welcome a conversation.
